Fire in the Fourth

May 20 @ 3:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Third annual Fire in the Fourth fundraising event on Saturday May 20, 2017 from 3-11PM will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Great Atlanta Fire of 1917 with this free, all ages curated street experience on Edgewood and Auburn Avenues between Jackson and Boulevard. Our community event highlights the history of our neighborhood while inviting everyone to be a part of the present. Check out our new website at fireinthe4th.com.

This year’s event will showcase over 30 local arts organizations, collaborations with Old Fourth Ward Business Association members and a diverse mix of live, local, interactions, installations and performances. Auburn Avenue is activated from 3-6 PM with a focus on history and kid’s activities. Edgewood Avenue is activated from 3-11PM with live music, performances, installations and fire games, fire theater and fire sculptures.

Auburn Avenue will feature kid’s activities by Kindezi School, Operation PEACE and Moving in the Spirit. The beloved fire trucks and puppet show will return with a new educational smokehouse from the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department. The King Center will host “The 100 Year History of the Old Fourth Ward” panel discussion with local author Rebecca Burns and historians from the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change and the Atlanta History Center. As a special Fire in the Fourth offering, the National Park’s Service will have a King Birth Home open house from 3-6pm, no ticket required. Don’t forget to step inside the historic fire station #6, at the corner of Auburn and Boulevard, to learn about the Atlanta Fire Department inside of the station that answered the call of the Great Atlanta Fire 100 years ago. You have a chance to Ride the Fire Bike Tour with Bicycle Tours of Atlanta again this year. Just 16 lucky attendees who sign up, will peddle the 5.2 mile path of the Great Atlanta Fire 100 years to the day it happened. Registration is open now.

Edgewood Avenue will feature non-stop performances, live music and interactions. Our main attraction will be the “The 100 Year History of Boulevard” installation featuring the history of our iconic street through historical images, stories and interactions. You’ll walk off of Boulevard to experience just before the Great Atlanta Fire of 1917 that changed the Old Fourth Ward forever. As you progress down Edgewood Avenue towards Jackson Street, you’ll take a journey learning about the fire and rebuilding efforts. Georgia Baptist Hospital, now Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center, relocated to the current site in 1921 and helped spur neighborhood revitalization. In the middle of the festival, the installation focuses on the civil rights movement and the establishment of the Martin Luther King Jr Center for Nonviolent Social Change in 1968 by Coretta Scott King. In 1975, Wingate Companies purchases a large stock of debilitated 1930’s era apartment buildings known as Bedford Pines community. As you near Jackson Street, you’ll enter into current times. WellStar Atlanta Medical Center, the largest employer in the Old Fourth Ward, and Wingate Companies will engage you to learn their plans and community offerings that will play a major role in the transformation of this main corridor back into the iconic Boulevard it once was. This installation will have you interacting with history through audio, re-enactments and historical images. Renew Atlanta, City of Atlanta’s Infrastructure Bond department, will also be displaying the complete streets project plans for Boulevard as well as Dekalb/Decatur Street. Be ready to be entertained, educated and engaged!

Fire in the Fourth would not be the same without The Imperial OPA and their multi-talented circus performers interacting with everyone throughout the event. Janke Glass Blowing demonstrations, Out of Hand’s 25 foot Resurgens puppet, a community chalk mural, and cornhole tournaments. Soulhound and Sailing to Denver will hit the main stage from 4-7pm. Returning for another fiery finish is the Circus Combustus fire troupe with two hours of non-stop fire performances starting at 9PM. Did someone say, let’s play the fire skeeball game in the Fire Gallery? This is just a spark of what we’ve got planned.

Total View VIP is located in the center of it all at the Georgia Justice Project. Ticketed guests will enjoy local craft brews by Creature Comforts and Arches Brewery, custom cocktail featuring Tito’s Handmade Vodka and a catered buffet by Bone Lick BBQ. Whewww…..sound amazing? The O4WBA produces this event through the generous support of sponsors. We are not your typical “arts” event with booths upon booths of vendors. Actually we only sell consumables or experiences like VIP, tasting/game tickets or the bike tour. This makes us the most unique community event in Atlanta, but also not the easiest model for raising money. We promote the businesses and positive image of the O4W community through our programming. Sponsors are encouraged to connect and promote through fun activations. All funds raised at the event through beer and spirit, VIP and ticket sales go back to community projects. We keep this event FREE for the community which enables us to promote the positive progress and businesses of the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood to everyone. We welcomed 5000 attendees in 2015, 8000 in 2016 and this year we expect about 10,000.
